Rumora Automatisering en
Advies announce the release of SQL Plugin 2.1.2 for Filemaker Pro 4/5 Mac OS & Mac OS X. The new version of the SQL plugin can use both JDBC and ODBC drivers.The SQL plugin uses type 3 and type 4 JDBC drivers that are written in pure Java language. The main advantage of these drivers is that they will run on any Java Virtual Machine that is SUN JDK compliant including Apple MRJ (MacOS runtime for Java). The other big advantage of JDBC drivers (type 3 and type 4) is that they do not require any other vendor specific software on the client side. For example, there is no need to use Oracle's SQL*Net or Sybase Open Client on your Macintosh. With the use of the JDBC drivers you can build crossplatform solutions using one and the same driver for your database. |

Rumora Automatisering en Advies expects that using JDBC drivers on MacOS will allow many users to connect to SQL databases of which vendors (like Oracle) have dropped ODBC support for MacOS.
The SQL Plugin for
Filemaker Pro allows FileMaker Pro 4/5 to act as a front end to another database supported by installed
JDBC/ODBC drivers. All standard SQL-92 commands are supported, thus allowing users to connect to JDBC/ODBC
datasources, to search, retrieve and update data in SQL databases and to create and modify tables.
FileMaker Pro 4/5 users with knowledge of SQL commands can use calculation fields and FileMaker Pro scripts to transparently connect FileMaker Pro databases to SQL environments. In doing so, FileMaker Pro is turned into a client to many widely used databases such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase, Butler and others. |
||
SQL Plugin allows users to enjoy the total benefit of the ease of use of FileMaker Pro with its scripting and layout possibilities, without the need of advanced programming techniques or knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++. Expensive and complicated development kits are no longer necessary to accomplish the same results. Extremely powerful solutions can now be built within FileMaker Pro, even by simply adjusting existing FileMaker Pro solutions.
Since the release of the first version of the SQL Plugin, the response has been overwhelming. Among current users are many large companies, who state that thanks to the plugin they are able to continue to use Filemaker Pro in combination with their large database systems.
Problems that occurred in previous versions that have now been repaired mainly concerned memory management issues on MacOS. Apart from that, performance and stability rates have been improved.
The Windows version of the plugin is developed by Professional Data Management (PDM), the MacOS version by Rumora Automatisering en Advies (RAA). Both versions are compatible with one another. Differences between the ODBC versions of SQL plugin are mainly a consequence of the fact that there sometimes is a difference between ODBC drivers for MacOS and for Windows. However, because of the fact that JDBC versions of the plugin can use the same JDBC driver there should not be any difference in JDBC versions.
SQL plugin 2.1 is available on a "try before you buy" basis. The plugin can be downloaded and tried out to see if it suits the needs of the user. After registration users can keep the original version; reinstallation is not necessary.
